Washington’s Draft Constitution and Yoda Patents Share a National Archives Exhibit

George Washington’s annotated draft Constitution, patents associated with Barbie and Yoda, and declassified UFO records appeared on an unusually varied artifact list for the National Archives Museum’s reimagined flagship exhibition. In a November 18, 2025, announcement, the National Archives said the exhibition was scheduled to open that Friday, November 21. The project formed part of a $40 million museum renovation, described by the agency as its first major transformation in two decades. The announcement presented the exhibition as a way to connect individual interests with the federal government’s historical records. Nine galleries would explore people, ideas and events across 250 years of U.S. history, with artificial intelligence helping visitors select subjects and receive related historical content. Visitors would also be able to revisit that content online. The planned physical displays extended well beyond founding-era documents. The agency listed the Louisiana Purchase Treaty, Thomas Edison’s lightbulb patent, declassified Cuban Missile Crisis records and the first government-sponsored film capturing the Wright brothers’ test flight. Presidential gifts supplied another unexpected connection. Among the listed objects were horseshoes Queen Elizabeth II gave President George H.W. Bush. Together, the selections illustrated the range of material preserved alongside the documents most closely associated with the Archives. The announcement also described an adjacent education space with arcade games and hands-on civics activities for children and families. The renovation received support through a public-private partnership involving Congress and donors to the National Archives Foundation. The National Archives preserves and makes available federal government records through archives, records centers and presidential libraries. Its 2025 exhibition announcement offered a reminder of how broad that responsibility is: the nation’s documentary record encompasses constitutional debates, diplomacy, invention, entertainment and the objects exchanged between heads of state.
