Main Points
Kimi Antonelli secured pole position for the United States Grand Prix, mathematically putting him in a strong position to clinch the Formula 1 World Championship. The Italian driver, racing for Mercedes, set a lap time 0.179 seconds faster than Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who finished second in qualifying. Antonelli’s seventh pole of the season came after a flawless performance in Saturday’s time‑trial on the Austin circuit. Antonelli said he was pleased with the lap time, adding, “We’re trying to win, but it won’t be easy.” While a pole gives him a significant points advantage, the championship will still hinge on the race outcome. Antonelli will need a favorable result for his teammate George Russell and a setback for Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton to secure the title. In the same session, Valtteri Bottas was the slowest of the field, and teammate Checo Pérez lost nearly a tenth of a second to Bottas. Pérez will start from the back of the grid because of a drive‑through penalty that also affected Gabriel Bortoleto and Franco Colapinto. Despite the penalty, Pérez has moved up to eighth in the internal time‑trial standings, now positioned 10th overall. The top ten qualifiers were: 1. Kimi Antonelli – Mercedes 2. Max Verstappen – Red Bull 3. Isack Hadjar – Red Bull 4. Charles Leclerc – Ferrari 5. Lewis Hamilton – Ferrari 6. George Russell – Mercedes 7. Oscar Piastri – McLaren 8. Lando Norris – McLaren 9. Arvid Lindblad – Racing Bull 10. Liam Lawson – Racing Bull The remaining positions were filled by Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Nico Hülkenberg (Audi), Gabriel Bortoleto (Audi), Franco Colapinto (Alpine), Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Oliver Bearman (Haas), Esteban Ocon (Haas), Lance Stroll (Aston Martin), Carlos Sainz (Williams), Alex Albon (Williams), Sergio Pérez (Cadillac) and Valtteri Bottas (Cadillac).
