Soca superstar Machel Montano has declared the late Mighty Sparrow the greatest ever to perform calypso, delivering an emotional tribute that also revealed his personal hierarchy of the art form’s most influential figures.

Reflecting on Sparrow’s passing in a Facebook video, Montano suggested that another chapter in calypso’s history had come to an end, declaring that the great fraternity of legends was now reunited.

But it was his explanation of the calypso hierarchy that offered one of the most intriguing moments of his reflection.

Using a pyramid to illustrate his perspective, Montano placed Roaring Lion at the very summit, describing the pioneering calypsonian as the “Godhead” of the art form.

Immediately beneath Roaring Lion, he reserved two positions for Mighty Sparrow and Lord Kitchener, placing them among the towering figures who helped define calypso for generations.

The next level included Calypso Rose, Singing Francine and Nelson, all celebrated performers whose contributions helped shape the development and international recognition of Caribbean music.

Montano also acknowledged other respected calypsonians, including Attila, Tiger, David Rudder, Scrunter, Gypsy and Chucky, recognising the depth of talent and influence across different generations.

However, despite placing Roaring Lion at the symbolic summit of his pyramid, Montano left little doubt about his assessment of Sparrow’s extraordinary career.

“I proclaim that. He is the greatest ever to do it,” Montano declared.

His distinction between Roaring Lion as the foundational figure and Sparrow as the greatest performer offers an interesting perspective on how calypso’s history and achievements are remembered.

Montano also revealed that he had been working on something concerning Sparrow for approximately two weeks, suggesting that his reflections extended beyond the immediate public mourning.

Sparrow, born Slinger Francisco, died on September 27, 2026, at the age of 91. His career spanned more than seven decades and included eight Calypso Monarch titles and eight Road March victories.

For Montano, whose own journey helped take soca music to international audiences, Sparrow represented far more than an entertainer. He was part of the foundation upon which modern Caribbean music was built.

The tribute also raises a question likely to generate discussion among calypso lovers: when considering the greatest figures in the art form’s history, should the highest honour belong to its pioneers, its most accomplished performers, or those whose influence continues across generations?
