Costa subraya la «necesidad estratégica» de reforzar la relación de la UE y Latinoamérica

António Costa, President of the European Council, emphasized on Thursday at the 30th Ibero-American Summit in Madrid that strengthening the relationship between the European Union (EU) and Latin America is a strategic necessity rather than an option. Speaking in the summit’s plenary session, Costa highlighted the shared values, interests, and deep political, cultural, and human ties between the two regions. He noted that both sides are committed to democracy, the rule of law, social cohesion, sustainable development, and the principles of the United Nations Charter. Costa also underscored the importance of reinforcing the United Nations, stating that the EU closely follows Latin America’s contribution to the selection of the next UN Secretary-General. He remarked that the process of selecting António Guterres’s successor is in its final stage and that the region’s input is of great interest. Several Ibero-American leaders present at the summit called for a Latin American or Caribbean candidate to assume the UN Secretary-General position. Costa Rica’s President Laura Fernández referenced the candidacy of Rebeca Grynspan, a Costa Rican diplomat, and urged that the organization be headed by a Latin American. Guatemala’s President Bernardo Arévalo also spoke on the region’s “historical opportunity” to lead the UN, while Colombian Vice President José Manuel Restrepo argued that the Secretary-General should represent Latin America and the Caribbean, a region he described as deserving of leadership. In addition to diplomatic priorities, Costa advocated for enhanced security cooperation between the EU and Latin America. He identified the fight against organized crime as a shared priority and emphasized the potential benefits of aligning regulatory frameworks, particularly in digital rights and protection mechanisms, to increase collective influence. Costa concluded by inviting all leaders to participate in the upcoming EU–CELAC summit scheduled for Brussels in 2027, affirming that Ibero-America can rely on the support of the European Union.
