Municipal police officer dies after head-on collision in Cunaripo

Municipal Police Constable Prye Nisha Persad died after a head-on collision along the Eastern Main Road in Cunaripo on Tuesday night, the Trinidad Express reported, citing police. Persad, who was attached to the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation, was driving around 7.30 p.m. when her vehicle collided with another travelling in the opposite direction. She was taken to the Sangre Grande Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The Express reported that the occupant or occupants of the other vehicle were also taken to hospital. The circumstances of the collision remained unclear at the time of the report, including whether Persad had been travelling alone. Assistant Commissioner Wayne Mystar, head of the Trinidad and Tobago Municipal Police Service, confirmed her death and extended condolences to her family, friends and colleagues. In a statement to the newspaper, he identified her last posting as the Sangre Grande Municipal Police Station. Mystar described her death as a painful loss to the service and said fellow officers honoured her dedication and stood alongside those mourning her passing. The fatal collision followed another deadly crash earlier on Tuesday. According to the Express, 66-year-old Lennox Sylvan of Unity Road, Diego Martin, died after a garbage truck struck his broken-down truck on the Audrey Jeffers Highway in Cocorite. Police said he had been attending to the engine when the collision occurred. The newspaper reported that the two deaths brought the national road fatality toll to 75 at the time of its report, compared with 102 for the corresponding period a year earlier. Details of what caused the Cunaripo collision remained unresolved in the published account.
