Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin Resigns, Speaker to Assume Acting Role

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin has resigned from office, according to a reliable source at Bangabhaban. The official announcement is expected at 5:00 PM Bangladesh time on Thursday.

Under Articles 50 and 54 of Bangladesh’s Constitution, the Speaker of Parliament will immediately assume duties as Acting President. The Jatiya Sangsad must then elect a new president within 90 days to complete the remainder of the term.

Shahabuddin, who was sworn in on April 24, 2023, was elected unopposed as the Awami League’s nominee. His five-year term was due to end in April 2028. The resignation follows days of intense speculation in Bangladeshi media, with reports suggesting health reasons for the decision.

Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Gani has emerged as a potential successor, though no senior BNP leader is reportedly under consideration. The transition marks a significant political moment for Bangladesh.
