Team leaders for the census mapping project concluded their training in Kinshasa on Friday, September 18, 2026. This training marks a significant step in the preparations for the Second General Census of Population and Housing (RGPH-2) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The training for team leaders follows a four-day program for 1,868 cartographic operators, which took place across 35 sites in Kinshasa’s four districts. Following their training, the operators underwent an evaluation to assess their readiness for field deployment.
The census mapping operation utilizes a hierarchical structure. Each team consists of four cartographic operators led by one team leader. Five teams are grouped into a brigade, which is overseen by a brigade chief. A single brigade comprises 26 personnel in total.
The primary responsibility of the cartographic teams is to verify existing data against ground realities. Operators are tasked with confirming zone boundaries, identifying housing and infrastructure, and updating information as necessary. This phase is intended to establish clear enumeration areas to facilitate the future population count and minimize the risk of omissions or double counting.
Kinshasa serves as the initial site for this operation, which will eventually expand to other provinces. Authorities have requested that the public cooperate with authorized teams and report any instances of individuals soliciting money in the name of the RGPH-2 project.
According to project officials, the various phases of the RGPH-2 are expected to generate approximately 160,000 direct jobs. The mapping phase is a preparatory requirement that precedes the actual population enumeration across the country.
