The price of diesel in France reached a new record on Sunday, averaging 2.41 euros per liter. This increase follows ongoing geopolitical instability in Iran, which has disrupted fuel supplies and triggered social tensions, including the blocking of oil depots by protesters.
Data from the Ministry of Economy’s Prix-carburants.gouv.fr website, analyzed by AFP, shows the average price for diesel reached 2.4097 euros per liter by 10:30 a.m. Sunday, based on reports from over 8,700 service stations. Other fuel types have also seen significant price hikes; the SP95-E10, the most widely sold fuel in France, averaged over 2.17 euros per liter, while SP98 exceeded 2.28 euros per liter.
In response to the rising costs, the French government has announced that its fuel subsidy program for high-mileage drivers, originally scheduled to expire on September 30, will be extended. Minister of Commerce Serge Papin confirmed the extension on TF1 last Friday.
However, the government faces fiscal constraints regarding further support. The Ministry of Economy reported on Saturday that public debt is expected to reach record levels in 2027, with a projected public deficit of 5.4 percent for 2026, up from 5.1 percent in 2025.
The current price surge, which began in late February, has led to localized unrest, such as the blockade of oil depots by fishermen in the Mediterranean region last Thursday. The government noted that the situation highlights France’s continued reliance on imported fossil fuels.
