On Saturday 19 September, a dispute between neighbours in the village of Saint‑Laurent de la Cabrerisse in the Aude department escalated into a shooting that left four people wounded.
The incident occurred just before midnight. Two residents, who had recently moved to the village, complained that the noise from a neighbouring party had become excessive. They had attempted to negotiate with the hosts on several occasions, but the parties reportedly refused to comply with the requests for quiet.
One of the aggrieved residents, reportedly enraged, retrieved a rifle in an attempt to intimidate the partygoers. During the confrontation, the resident allegedly tried to disarm the other occupant of the house, and a shot was fired that struck the second person. Additional shots were fired, striking a total of four individuals.
Emergency services responded immediately. The victims were transported in a state of relative emergency to the Carcassonne hospital and the Narbonne hospital.
The Peloton de Surveillance et d’Intervention (PSI) of the French Gendarmerie, a rapid‑response unit that assists local forces in difficult situations, was on the scene. The man who allegedly fired the rifle has been placed in custody.
Investigators are still determining the exact circumstances of the shooting. Several accounts differ. According to a witness, the partygoers, whose noisy celebration had continued until 10:30 p.m., reacted poorly to the neighbours’ requests for silence and allegedly physically assaulted them, prompting the resident to retrieve his firearm. Police are conducting interviews to clarify the sequence of events.
