The United Nations and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have formally condemned recent attacks by the Houthi group targeting civilian facilities in Saudi Arabia. The condemnation was issued by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and GCC Secretary-General Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi during a meeting held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.
During the meeting, both leaders discussed regional security and stability, emphasizing the importance of strengthening the partnership between the UN and the GCC. Guterres expressed appreciation for the progress and development achieved by GCC member states and acknowledged the organization’s efforts to promote regional and international security.
The diplomatic response followed a military incident on Saturday, September 19, 2026. Major General Turki Al-Malki, spokesperson for the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen, reported that Saudi Royal Air Defense Forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by Houthi forces toward Riyadh. Al-Malki characterized the attack as a deliberate and systematic attempt to target civilians and public infrastructure in the capital, which houses over eight million people.
In addition to the incident in Riyadh, the coalition reported that Houthi forces attempted similar attacks against civilian and public facilities in the cities of Baish, Taif, Farasan, and Yanbu. According to Al-Malki, all of these attempts were thwarted by Saudi air defense systems.
Al-Malki stated that the Coalition Command reserves the right to take appropriate measures in accordance with international humanitarian law to prevent further attacks by the Houthi militia.
