The Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture announced that two specimens of the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata) have been detected in monitoring traps in Old San Juan. The identification was confirmed by the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), triggering an immediate coordinated response.
This invasive pest is considered one of the most destructive fruit flies in the world, capable of infesting over 300 types of fruits and vegetables. Its presence threatens local agriculture, which is vital to Puerto Rico’s economy.
Authorities are now implementing quarantine protocols and enhanced surveillance to contain any potential spread. The public is urged to report any suspicious fruit damage to the Department of Agriculture.
