Hailey Bieber, the model and founder of the cosmetics brand Rhode, has publicly discussed the health challenges she faced after giving birth to her son, Jack Blues, in August 2022. In a recent interview with USA Today, the 31‑year‑old explained how her postpartum period was marked by severe physical and mental health complications. Bieber said she experienced a postpartum hemorrhage immediately after delivery. According to her account, the bleeding was so severe that the uterus failed to contract properly, a condition known as uterine atony. Medical staff reportedly used a device called Jada, which creates a vacuum to help the uterus contract, to control the bleeding. She described the event as frightening and noted that postpartum hemorrhage is the leading cause of maternal death worldwide. In addition to the hemorrhage, Bieber revealed that she has been dealing with premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). She said the disorder, which is a severe form of premenstrual syndrome, can cause intense anxiety, hopelessness, insomnia, and episodes of depression. She cited statistics that PMDD affects between 3 % and 9 % of reproductive‑age women and that the average delay in diagnosis can be up to 20 years. “It’s frustrating that there’s so little research and public awareness about these conditions,” she said. Bieber also discussed a number of other medical issues that have impacted her life. At age 25, she suffered a transient ischemic attack—a “mini‑stroke”—and later had a congenital heart defect that required surgical repair. She said that when she became pregnant, doctors discovered a septum in her uterus that increased the risk of preterm birth and miscarriage. Because of this, she underwent strict monitoring and ultimately had an induced labor after her water broke. The model has said that the combination of these health problems, along with the intense media scrutiny she faces as a public figure, has made the postpartum period especially difficult. She has spoken about the pressure to return to her pre‑pregnancy body and the rumors that circulated on social media about her marriage to singer Justin Bieber. In an effort to use her platform to raise awareness, Bieber announced that Rhode will partner with a nonprofit organization for a three‑year program. The company will donate $5 million to support research, education, and care in underfunded areas of women’s health, including complicated pregnancies, postpartum recovery, and disorders such as PMDD. She said the partnership is the brand’s largest philanthropic initiative to date. Bieber urged women who experience similar symptoms to speak openly about their health. “Only through open conversation can we reduce the stigma and create a sense of community,” she said. The model’s disclosures have prompted discussion among medical professionals and advocacy groups about the need for better postpartum care and mental‑health support for new mothers.
