Abdul El‑Sayed, the first Muslim elected to the United States Senate, appeared on ABC’s “The View” to respond to remarks made by former President Donald Trump. During the interview, El‑Sayed addressed Trump’s comment that he would need to pass through a metal detector to enter the Senate chamber. He said, “I am ready to go through a metal detector all day. Donald, if you’re watching, my offer for you to take a lie‑detector test is still valid.” El‑Sayed, a 42‑year‑old Democrat from Michigan, won the Senate seat in the 2026 election, defeating Republican Mike Rogers. He will take his oath of office on January 3, 2027. In addition to the metal‑detector remark, El‑Sayed discussed how his religious identity was used against him during the campaign and noted that political debates have shifted away from issues such as the economy, health care, and the cost of living.
