**SYECO Calls for Relocation of Camp Molayi School Near Matadi Central Prison**
*Matadi, Democratic Republic of Congo – September 4, 2026* – The Syndicat des enseignants du Congo (SYECO), Kongo‑Central section, has formally requested that the Institut Camp Molayi be moved from its current location within the Molayi police camp, which lies adjacent to the central prison in Matadi. The union argues that the proximity of the school to the prison poses security risks for students and staff, especially in the event of a prison incident or escape.
According to SYECO’s provincial secretary, Dumbi Tsimba Georges, the school community has previously sought to distance the institution from the prison following escape incidents recorded in 2022 and 2023. “All correspondence sent to provincial authorities has gone unanswered. Today we are addressing an open letter to the President of the Republic to give this situation the attention it deserves: foresight must precede catastrophe,” he said.
The provincial ministry of Education has acknowledged receipt of SYECO’s requests. A ministerial delegation visited the site, and technical studies are underway to assess the feasibility of relocating the school outside the police camp. The outcome of these studies will determine whether the institution can be moved to a safer location.
