Icelandic Rescuers Race Against Storm as Roofs Blow Away in Ölfus

An urgent rescue operation unfolded in Iceland’s Ölfus region on Sunday as a violent storm tore through the area, forcing emergency teams into action. One dramatic moment saw a caller to Iceland’s emergency line lying on a loose roofing sheet, desperately holding it down to prevent further damage. The incident was reported by ICE-SAR, Iceland’s rescue association, which described multiple callouts related to wind damage across the region.

Rescue teams were deployed to secure roofs and address structural threats, including an old barn at Litla-Saurbær whose roof was on the verge of collapse. The barn, already scheduled for demolition, became an immediate priority. A contractor with a truck-mounted crane was already on site, but the storm accelerated the need for action. With the structure deemed unsafe, the occupier agreed to proceed with the demolition, and the contractor used the equipment already present to bring the barn down safely.

Elsewhere, loose roofing sheets posed risks at a stable in Eyrarbakki and a recently built home. Rescue teams drove through affected communities to assess conditions, securing roofs and ensuring public safety before returning to their bases. The incidents occurred during the storm covered in Iceland Review’s weekend forecast, though Monday’s outlook from the Met Office suggests the low-pressure system is moving away, with winds expected to ease gradually.

While the storm has passed, the Met Office’s Monday forecast indicates southwesterly winds of 10–18 metres per second initially, easing to 5–13 m/s by afternoon. However, travellers are advised to remain cautious, as wind damage and slope hazards remain separate concerns. The Icelandic Met Office’s latest warnings should be consulted for real-time updates, as conditions can change rapidly.

This was not the first time Iceland has faced severe weather challenges this autumn. The country’s unpredictable climate, characterised by sudden storms and high winds, often tests the resilience of its infrastructure and emergency services. The swift response of ICE-SAR and local contractors highlights the importance of preparedness in such situations, ensuring that even long-planned demolitions can be executed safely under pressure.
