The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy hospital ship, Auspicious Ark, arrived in Nouakchott, Mauritania, on Tuesday for a seven-day visit as part of the Mission Harmony-2026 initiative. During the visit, a medical team from the vessel established a free clinic in the city’s Arafat District, where they examined more than 200 local residents.
The medical team, comprised of over 100 members from more than 20 institutions, provides services ranging from general consultations to specialized care. At the Arafat clinic, doctors addressed various health concerns, including chronic pain and ophthalmological issues. Patients requiring more intensive care, such as surgery, were referred to the hospital ship, which is equipped with 18 clinical departments and the capacity to perform over 60 types of surgical procedures.
This visit marks the second time a Chinese naval hospital ship has provided medical services to Mauritania. Fatimatou Abdel Malick, president of the Nouakchott Regional Council, noted the significance of the medical assistance provided by the Chinese team. In addition to providing direct care, the crew is conducting professional exchanges, training, and consultations at local medical facilities and Mauritanian military units.
