A peaceful morning fishing trip turned deadly at the Colombo Port City suspension bridge today, as a dispute between rival Chinese smuggling gangs erupted into violence. Three Chinese nationals were attacked, with one man abducted and later found murdered.
The suspects, reportedly trying to flee the country, were arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport. Police believe the gangs are involved in large-scale illegal smuggling operations in Sri Lanka.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community and raised questions about security at the state-of-the-art Port City, a symbol of Sri Lanka’s modernisation. “This is supposed to be a safe, upscale area,” a local resident said. “Now we hear of gang murders here.”
Authorities are investigating the extent of the smuggling networks and whether more arrests are imminent. The case continues to unfold.
