Authorities have taken Satkhira-4 Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam and his first wife into police custody for questioning following the discovery of the body of his second wife, Mosammat Mariyam Khatun, at a NAM Bhaban apartment in Dhaka.
Deputy Commissioner of the Tejgaon Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Ibne Mizan, confirmed the development to reporters at approximately 10:00 p.m. on the night of the incident. Police were alerted to a hanging body in flat 203 of building number 5 at the NAM Bhaban complex in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar around 7:00 p.m.
Following the report, teams from the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), and the Detective Branch (DB) arrived at the scene. Officials confirmed the apartment is registered to the Member of Parliament. The CID processed the crime scene, and local police conducted an initial examination of the body before sending it to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.
Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected to the 13th National Parliament representing the Satkhira-4 constituency as a candidate for Jamaat-e-Islami. In July, a video featuring the lawmaker and a young woman circulated on social media. At that time, Islam identified the woman as his second wife, Mariyam Khatun.
Following the circulation of the video, Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Islam from the party on July 22. The party subsequently issued letters to the Speaker of the Parliament and the Election Commission requesting formal action against him.
