The government of Bangladesh has announced a significant increase in the prices of diesel, petrol, octane, and kerosene, effective from midnight on Sunday. According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, the price of diesel has been raised by 20 taka per liter, moving from 115 taka to 135 taka.
Under the new pricing structure, the price of kerosene has increased from 135 taka to 155 taka per liter. Petrol prices have risen from 140 taka to 160 taka per liter, while the price of octane has been adjusted from 145 taka to 165 taka per liter.
The Energy and Mineral Resources Division stated that the price adjustments were necessary due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has caused a significant rise in global fuel prices and freight charges since March. The ministry noted that while international fuel prices have more than doubled, the government had previously maintained domestic prices to protect public interest.
Official data indicates that the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) incurred a loss of approximately 22.87 billion taka between March and August due to the disparity between international costs and domestic retail prices. The ministry further stated that fuel prices in neighboring countries remain significantly higher than those in Bangladesh.
