Crowd Violence Mars Mendi Muruks Comeback Win at Minj Oval

A stunning comeback victory by the Mendi Muruks has been overshadowed by crowd disturbances that erupted during their PNG Digicel Cup clash with the Waghi Tumbe at Minj Oval. The Muruks trailed 16-6 at halftime but rallied to win 22-16, displaying disciplined football in the second half. However, the on-field drama was eclipsed by troubling scenes in the stands. Bottles were reportedly thrown onto the field, perimeter fences were breached, and alcohol was allegedly brought into the ground. The referee was also confronted after the final whistle. The PNG National Rugby League Competition (PNGNRLC) has launched an investigation, collecting reports from both clubs, match officials, and game day staff. ‘The matter will be fully investigated when all information is available to be reviewed,’ a PNGNRLC statement said. The incidents have reignited concerns about security at Highlands rugby league venues and the safety of players and officials.
