Bupati Malinau Berharap Peluang Anak-anak Perbatasan Jadi TNI Diperbesar

Bupati Malinau, Wempi W. Mawa, expressed on 23 October 2026 that the opportunities for children from border areas—particularly those in Malinau Regency, North Kalimantan—to join the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) should be expanded. The remarks were made during a visit by Vice Commander of the TNI and Head of the National Border Management Agency (BNPPDT), General Maruli Simanjuntak. “Yesterday I discussed with the Vice Commander how the process for local children, including those from Malinau, can be given a chance,” Mawa told reporters in Malinau on 24 October. He added that President Prabowo Subianto has already created space to broaden such opportunities. “If children from border regions are given room, the defense and security of the country will be more optimal,” he said. Mawa emphasized that applicants must meet established standards—health, strength, mental and spiritual fitness—before being accepted into the armed forces. Mawa believes that many border children have the potential to become TNI personnel and, in the future, officers through training at the Military Academy. “We hope that one day defense and security will not only rely on external forces but also include well-prepared local youths who have gone through all necessary preparations,” he said. The discussion with General Maruli lasted about 30 minutes and focused on the broader national interest. Maruli, who also heads BNPPDT, visited Malinau and the Krayan Nunukan border area to inspect the Indonesian–Malaysia border security posts (Pamtas). “After my field visit, it is clear that cooperation between the TNI and BNPPDT is essential,” Maruli said at Colonel RA Bessing Airport in Malinau on 23 October. The initiative reflects ongoing efforts to involve local communities in national defense, particularly in regions that share a border with Malaysia.
