On September 12, 2026, the 18th BRICS Summit opened in New Delhi as leaders arrived at the Bharat Mandapam venue under India’s chairmanship.

Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto were among the first to arrive. Earlier that day, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed Al Nahyan also reached the site.

During the summit, the leaders will hold a closed session on “Inclusive Global Governance and Strengthening Multilateralism” and will attend the Bharat Innovates Exhibition.

The event is themed “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” with a focus on development, sustainability and innovation.

BRICS now comprises 11 member states: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates.

India’s chairmanship comes amid global economic fragmentation, technological disruption, geopolitical uncertainty, climate change and resource pressures. The expanded grouping is intended to provide a platform for cooperation on development, climate action, technology, energy, financial resilience and reforms in global institutions.
