In Astana, a single‑breed exhibition titled «Қазақы тазы» was held to assess the breeding qualities of the Kazakh Tazy dog. The event took place at an international exhibition venue that hosts all dog breeds, allowing foreign experts, canine specialists and breeders to evaluate the Tazy.
During the show, the dogs underwent a specialist assessment that examined their breed characteristics and compliance with established standards. A separate breeding inspection was conducted, and owners of dogs that met the requirements received international “Dog Origin” certificates. These documents enable the dogs to be officially entered into the breeding system and provide accurate lineage data.
President of the Kazakh Kennel Union, Baurzhan Serikkali, said the main goal of such events is not only to identify the best dogs but to establish a systematic breeding program for the Kazakh Tazy. “For international recognition, dogs must be purebred and their pedigrees must be accurately documented,” he explained. He added that maintaining records in rural areas is essential, noting that more than 4,000 Tazys are officially registered in the country, but many unregistered dogs exist in the countryside. If all of them were registered, the number of purebred Tazys could reach six or seven thousand.
The Tazy is considered part of Kazakhstan’s cultural heritage and has been officially registered as a breed since 2024. The state has shown strong support for the breed, including the construction of a national center in the Jetisu region. The exhibition also honored several specialists and industry representatives for their contributions to the preservation, breeding, hunting development and promotion of the Tazy.
The competition’s winner was a Tazy named Elys, owned by 79‑year‑old Ramazan Eseyev from Karaganda. Eseyev, who has kept Tazys since he was six, said, “My dog Elys has become the winner today. In our house, Tazys have always lived. I have kept Tazys since I was six. I am 79 now. In that time, 50–60 Tazys have passed through my hands. I now keep two purebred Tazys. Today my dog met the breed criteria and became the winner. Before that, I also won many breeding shows, including foreign exhibitions.”
Systematic registration and origin control of Kazakh Tazys are seen as crucial for preserving the breed’s characteristics and ensuring responsible breeding practices.
