Americans Try Spice Bag for First Time and Love It: ‘Best Thing We’ve Eaten’

Two American tourists visiting Dublin have gone viral after trying the iconic Irish spice bag for the first time and declaring it the best food they’ve had in the city. In a video posted on social media, Kaitlyn Lavery and her fiancée Andrew Gordon visited Xi’an Street Food on Anne Street to sample the takeaway favourite. The couple, who had already enjoyed multiple pints of Guinness, were eager to try what Kaitlyn called a ‘Dublin delicacy’. Displaying the spice bag to the camera, she listed the ingredients: crispy chicken, chips, carrots, spring onions, garlic, and chili oil. After trying the chicken first with no sauce, she remarked it was ‘a little sweet’ before dipping it into a curry sauce. ‘The curry sauce is a lot thinner than I thought it would be,’ she said. But it was when she tried more of the chicken that she gave her verdict: ‘This is delicious. This is probably my entire day’s worth of sodium in one bag. I can see how this would be a phenomenal drunk food.’ After trying both sauces, she concluded: ‘Guys, I love a spice bag, I love it. I think this is the best thing we’ve eaten so far. This is really good.’ The spice bag, a fusion of Irish and Chinese cuisine, was reportedly invented at the Sunflower Chinese takeaway in Templeogue, Dublin, around 2006. It typically consists of crispy chicken, chips, chopped vegetables, and Chinese spices, all shaken up in a bag. The video has delighted Irish viewers, with many sharing their own love for the dish.
