Ajit Agarkar has announced that he will not seek an extension of his contract as the chief selector of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). His current term, which began in 2022, is set to expire on 4 October 2024.
The decision was highlighted during the BCCI’s 95th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mumbai. The meeting, attended by representatives from the board’s affiliated state associations, included former India captain Sourav Ganguly of the Cricket Association of Bengal and former India pacer Venkatesh Prasad of the Karnataka State Cricket Association.
A senior BCCI official stated that the board’s office‑bearers have been authorised to make decisions regarding the selection committees. The official did not elaborate on Agarkar’s future beyond confirming that his tenure would end on 4 October.
In addition to the senior men’s selection committee, the BCCI is in the process of appointing all five members of the junior selection committee. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said the board has received a large number of applications and expects to complete the selection process within the next 10 to 15 days. “We have received a very large number of applicants and once the shortlisting is completed, then we will give it to our cricket committee,” Saikia told reporters.
Saikia also confirmed that current India fielding coach Subhadeep Ghosh has been appointed on a short‑term basis. His future engagement will be decided after an assessment of his performance. “We will be assessing his performance and as per the opinion given by the concerned persons in the team management, we will take a decision to continue his engagement as a fielding coach of the Indian team,” Saikia added.
With Agarkar’s contract ending in October, the BCCI will begin the search for a new chief selector and will also finalize the composition of the junior selection committee in the coming weeks.
