Afenyo-Markin pushes for Health Minister’s appearance over shutdown of health information systems

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin has urged the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to appear before Parliament to explain the shutdown of Ghana’s Health Information Management Systems. Afenyo‑Markin said the Minister should brief lawmakers on the circumstances that led to the disruption, which reportedly followed an unpaid cloud‑hosting bill of more than US$64,000. The matter was raised in the House amid concerns that the outage could compromise health‑information management and reporting nationwide. Majority Leader James Agalga responded that the House would take steps to invite Minister Akandoh to explain the situation. Agalga added that the engagement would give Parliament an opportunity to examine the challenges and to establish measures to restore the affected systems. The shutdown began on 29 October 2026 after technology provider Akamai suspended ten servers over an outstanding payment of US$64,510.95, according to the Ghana Health Service. The suspended platforms include the District Health Information Management System (DHIMS2), the Planning and Budget Management Information System, eTracker, HIV and tuberculosis trackers, and the National Malaria Data Repository. Because of the outage, health facilities have temporarily reverted to paper‑based records while the Ghana Health Service works to restore access. The Service has indicated that settling the outstanding hosting bill could allow the suspended platforms to be restored without the need to rebuild them.
