Saudi coalition intercepts missile fired towards Medina

The Saudi-led coalition announced on Thursday that it had intercepted a ballistic missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement toward the Medina region, home to the holy city of Mecca. The missile was reportedly fired from Houthi-held territory in the south of Yemen and was intercepted by the coalition’s air‑defence system before it could reach its target. The announcement came minutes after Saudi Arabia’s civil‑defence agency issued a warning of a potential danger near the strategic port city of Yanbu, located on the Red Sea coast. The agency’s National Early Warning Platform in Yanbu Governorate had issued a notice to alert residents of a possible threat, but later stated that the danger had passed. The Houthis, also known as Ansar Allah, denied that the missile was aimed at Medina. “Our operations target only oil facilities and military bases,” Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree wrote on X. He called the allegation a “blatant and grave falsehood.” The group has repeatedly targeted Yemen’s energy infrastructure and military sites, including the port of Yanbu, which is a major oil export hub and a key outlet for crude transported through the kingdom’s East‑West pipeline. In other developments, Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces reported gains in the Sanamat area of Taiz governorate. Colonel Majed Abdullah al‑Nazili said that government troops had carried out 1,298 targeting operations against the Houthis in the past 24 hours, killing about 400 Houthi fighters and destroying 132 vehicles, cars or heavy‑weapon positions. Al‑Jazeera could not independently verify these figures. The government had previously reclaimed the Dhubab district of Taiz and key positions near the Bab al‑Mandeb strait. On the al‑Jawf front, engineering units were clearing mines and booby‑traps from recaptured sites. According to the government, 16,100 Houthi operatives and commanders had been killed or wounded since 5 October. The Houthis have not confirmed a death toll but have continued to fire missiles at Saudi Arabia, striking multiple airports and disrupting air traffic over the kingdom. Yazeed al‑Jeddawy, a research manager at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies, told Al Jazeera that the conflict is increasingly moving toward a prolonged war of attrition. “The conflict is no longer driven solely by the dynamics inside Yemen; it is intertwined with the wider regional confrontation and the war involving Iran,” he said.
