PNP probes alleged personal use of seized vehicles by cops

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has initiated an internal investigation into allegations that police officers have been using impounded and recovered vehicles for personal errands, including at the national headquarters in Camp Crame. PNP Chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. issued an order on Friday requiring all police units to account for every seized vehicle currently in their custody. The directive aims to determine if any of these assets have been utilized without authorization. The investigation follows concerns raised by Senator Raffy Tulfo regarding reports that recovered stolen vehicles—which are intended to be returned to their owners or preserved as evidence—were being used by police personnel. “Recovered and impounded vehicles are not personal property of any police officer. They are under police custody for a specific legal purpose and must be handled with strict accountability,” Nartatez said in a statement. The PNP chief has instructed units to verify the status of all seized property, investigate potential misuse, and identify any personnel responsible for violations. Nartatez emphasized that no officer is exempt from these policies, noting that the misuse of property entrusted to the police undermines the integrity of evidence and public trust. Personnel found to have violated regulations regarding seized property may face both administrative and criminal charges, according to the PNP. This probe is part of a broader effort by the PNP to enhance internal accountability, aligning with directives from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla. “Any personnel found abusing their authority will be held accountable under the law. Public trust depends on our ability to enforce the rules fairly, including within our own ranks,” Nartatez added.
