Reyes says Kirth cannot travel after being discharged from hospital

A caregiver’s emotional account of her experience at a Welfare office has raised questions about how social assistance services accommodate people who are physically unable to attend appointments.

In a video shared on Instagram, Ali Reyes expressed frustration over the treatment she claimed to have received while attempting to secure welfare assistance for a man identified as Kirth, who she said was discharged from hospital despite being unable to move the right side of his body.

According to Reyes, transporting Kirth home was already a major challenge because the family lives along a track, away from the main road. She said approximately six people were needed to carry him on a stretcher to the house.

Reyes explained that she subsequently visited the Welfare office with his hospital discharge documents, hoping to arrange assistance that would allow him to reapply for benefits without leaving his home.

However, she alleged that an officer she identified as Miss Rampersad insisted Kirth would have to attend the office personally to sign the necessary documents.

Reyes said she repeatedly explained that he could not move and questioned how she was expected to transport him down the hill when simply getting him into his bed had required considerable assistance.

In the video, Reyes became visibly frustrated as she questioned the treatment of vulnerable citizens who depend on public assistance.

She also criticised the decision to discharge Kirth from hospital, suggesting that pressure on hospital beds may have contributed to his release. However, that suggestion has not been independently verified.

The situation raises a wider question about the accessibility of welfare services for bedridden patients, people with severe disabilities and others who cannot physically visit government offices.

It also highlights the importance of clear procedures for home visits, alternative signing arrangements and assistance for individuals with serious mobility limitations.

The claims made by Reyes have not been independently verified, and no official response from the Welfare office or hospital was available in the material reviewed.

The central question remains: what arrangements are available when someone genuinely needs welfare assistance but is physically incapable of reaching the office?
