Nyt iskee sääkäänne: Talvi vyöryy Suomeen

The latest monthly forecast from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), published on October 28, indicates that Finland is transitioning toward colder, more winter-like weather. The prolonged period of mild temperatures is expected to subside as the country enters November. Winter conditions are forecast to arrive in Lapland first. While a high-pressure system forming over the British Isles during the first week of November is expected to keep major precipitation away from Finland, snow and sleet are anticipated in the northern regions. The possibility of snowfall in southern Finland during the first week of November cannot be entirely ruled out. As nighttime temperatures are expected to drop below freezing across the country, authorities advise motorists to consider switching to winter tires. Forecasts for the second week of November and beyond remain uncertain due to discrepancies between various weather models. Current estimates suggest that weather patterns will remain relatively typical for the season. Statistically, this implies that daytime temperatures in Lapland and Kainuu will drop below freezing during the second week of the month. In other parts of the country, daytime temperatures are expected to range between zero and six degrees Celsius, though nighttime frost will likely be widespread. As the month progresses, average temperatures in central Finland are expected to stabilize below freezing, and by late November, winter conditions may reach parts of southern Finland. Meteorologists note that these forecasts are subject to rapid change. One factor influencing long-term uncertainty is the polar vortex—a system of strong winds high in the atmosphere circling the North Pole. There is a possibility that the vortex could break down earlier than usual this autumn. While such an event could allow arctic air to reach Finland later in the winter, the current monthly forecast does not yet specify the timing of any potential cold spells resulting from this phenomenon.
