Bangladesh is considering privatizing its electricity distribution system at the consumer level to enhance accountability, service quality, and billing efficiency. Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmood disclosed the plan on Wednesday during a discussion titled ‘Energy Security and Transformation of Bangladesh’ in Dhaka. The move aims to address long-standing issues in the power sector, including poor service and inaccurate billing. While details are yet to be finalized, the privatization initiative could significantly impact how millions of Bangladeshi consumers receive and pay for electricity. The government hopes private sector involvement will bring greater efficiency and transparency.
