President Md. Sahabuddin’s resignation on Friday has drawn sharp reactions from political parties. Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman thanked Allah, stating that ‘a black shadow of autocracy has been removed.’ Speaking at the opposition leader’s official residence on Mint Road, Rahman said they had long considered Sahabuddin unfit for the presidency. He welcomed acting President Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, expressing hope for his integrity.
In contrast, the National Citizen Party (NCP) demanded the immediate arrest of Sahabuddin, whom they labeled a ‘fascist accomplice.’ NCP member secretary Aktar Hossain at a press conference in Banglamotor accused the former president of seeking a safe exit and insisted on trial for his alleged crimes. Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis echoed similar demands, calling for an impartial investigation.
Jamaat’s Rahman also noted corruption allegations against Sahabuddin, saying no one is above the law if credible evidence surfaces. He added that they would monitor if Sahabuddin attempts to leave the country for medical treatment. The developments mark a significant political shift in Bangladesh.
