Libya Imposes Animal Movement Ban as Foot-and-Mouth Outbreak Spreads

Libyan authorities have confirmed an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in both eastern and western regions, sparking an immediate crackdown on animal movement. Since June 27, cases have been identified, prompting the Agricultural Police, alongside veterinarians and municipal police, to launch preventative operations.

Roads leading into Greater Tripoli and several municipalities have been closed, and the transportation of livestock between areas is now prohibited. Officials say these measures aim to contain the highly contagious virus that threatens the country’s livestock sector.

Inspection teams are visiting livestock and sheep breeding sheds, sealing off infected farms, and conducting checks at popular animal markets. Some markets have been closed entirely. Municipalities have also begun spraying animal enclosures as a precautionary step.

The outbreak raises concerns for food security and rural economies in Libya, where livestock farming is a critical livelihood. Authorities have not yet disclosed the number of affected animals or farms but continue to urge compliance with the restrictions.
