Bird enthusiasts in India are increasingly looking beyond traditional sanctuaries to observe diverse avian species in wetlands, forests, and urban environments. Several locations across the country have been identified as significant habitats for migratory and resident birds.
In the village of Menar, the local wetlands serve as a habitat for Sarus Cranes, Indian Skimmers, Spot-billed Pelicans, and Painted Storks. These ponds also host Lesser Flamingos and Black-tailed Godwits.
Bhopal’s lakes support a variety of species, including Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Bronze-winged Jacanas, Black-winged Stilts, and Lesser Whistling-Ducks. Eurasian Spoonbills have also been documented in the area.

The waters of Kolleru and its surrounding wetlands attract Spot-billed Pelicans, Painted Storks, Asian Openbills, and Grey Herons.
Chilika Lake and the Mangalajodi area are frequented by Garganeys and Ruddy Shelducks during the winter months. Other species observed in the region include Greater Painted Snipes and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas.
Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh records sightings of Northern Pintails, Common Teals, Common Pochards, and Tufted Pochards during winter mornings.
On the eastern edge of Kolkata, the wetlands support populations of Grey Herons, Purple Herons, Little Egrets, and Asian Openbills.
