Saint Paul, Archbishop of Constantinople (also known as the Archbishop of Caesarea), was a prominent figure in the early Christian Church who became a victim of the Arian controversy that long shook the Orthodox Church. According to some accounts, he was repeatedly elevated to the patriarchal throne and later deposed, depending on the prevailing influence in the violent struggle between Arians and Orthodox Christians. In 350, Paul was imprisoned in the Cappadocian town of Kukuz, where he was strangled with his own rope. His death is recorded as occurring in that year. In 381, his relics were transferred to Constantinople, and later they were moved to Venice. The relics remain in Venice to this day. In Venice, the feast days of Saint Paul, Pavlin, Luke, Pavlina, Pavleta, and Claudia are celebrated annually.
