Yellow weather warning issued for South Iceland as gales and rain approach

South Iceland is under a yellow weather warning as easterly and southeasterly gales approach this evening, October 11. The Icelandic Met Office has forecast winds of 15–23 metres per second (54–83 km/h) and rain across the region, with the strongest conditions expected late in the evening and overnight.

The warning advises residents and visitors to check the latest official forecasts and travel conditions before heading out, particularly along the south coast. The Met Office’s update, issued at 04:53 on Sunday, indicates that winds will strengthen gradually throughout the day, easing slightly on Monday with southerly winds of 5–13 m/s and scattered showers.

While South Iceland braces for the inclement weather, North Iceland is expected to remain calmer, with mostly fair conditions. The capital area will also see easterly winds of 13–20 m/s and rain later in the evening.

This warning follows a period of heavy rain and strong winds in late September, though current road conditions remain unconfirmed. Drivers are encouraged to consult the Met Office’s live warnings, official road information, and SafeTravel for real-time updates. For those planning outdoor activities or travel, the Iceland Review’s guide to driving in Iceland offers additional safety considerations.

The yellow warning serves as a reminder of Iceland’s unpredictable weather, particularly in autumn when storms can develop rapidly. Residents and tourists alike are urged to exercise caution and adapt their plans accordingly.
