Vooral niet-stemmers laten hun mening horen bij Marokkaanse verkiezingen

On Wednesday, Morocco will hold national elections, but voter registration stands at only 56 % of eligible citizens, with youth participation even lower.

Despite a robust economy that has grown at an average of 4.5 % per year since 2021, the country remains Africa’s leading industrial and tourism hub.

However, more than one‑third of Moroccan youth are unemployed, fueling widespread discontent among the younger generation.

The Moroccan monarchy retains control over foreign policy, defense, religion and justice, limiting the scope for political change through elections.

Analysts suggest that the upcoming vote is unlikely to produce significant shifts in governance or address the underlying social and economic grievances.
