Uganda gives its oil a name. Now it has to find a market

**Uganda Unveils “Pearl Sweet” Brand for National Crude Oil**

**KAMPALA, Uganda** – Nearly two decades after the initial discovery of oil reserves in the country, the Ugandan government has officially branded its crude oil “Pearl Sweet.”

President Yoweri Museveni unveiled the name on September 2, 2026. The branding marks a transition for the nation’s petroleum sector, moving from the exploration and development phase toward commercial production and market entry.

The naming of the crude oil serves as a significant milestone for Uganda, which has spent the last 20 years navigating the logistical and political challenges associated with developing its oil infrastructure. With the brand now established, the government faces the next phase of its energy strategy: securing viable international markets for its petroleum exports.

The development follows years of infrastructure planning, including the construction of pipelines and processing facilities intended to bring the country’s oil to the global market. Officials have framed the move as a shift from long-standing political promises to a tangible commercial reality.
