Tom Dewdney turns 93: A Jamaican bowler’s West Indies journey

Tom Dewdney turns 93 on 23 October 2026, a birthday that offers Jamaica an opportunity to revisit his career as a West Indies Test cricketer. His story includes a rapid rise to international cricket, a five-wicket performance in New Zealand and a hat-trick on an England tour.

The Jamaican bowler reached Test cricket with remarkably little first-class experience. According to his published biography, he had played just two first-class matches for Jamaica in 1954–55, taking three wickets, before being selected to open the bowling in the Fourth and Fifth Tests against Australia later that season. In the first innings of the Fourth Test, he took four wickets for 125 runs.

Selection for the 1955–56 tour of New Zealand followed. Dewdney collected eight wickets across his three Tests on that trip, including a standout performance in the Fourth Test in Auckland: five wickets for 21 runs from 19.5 overs.

His strongest first-class bowling figures came in 1956–57, when he took seven for 55 against a Duke of Norfolk’s XI composed mostly of English Test players. That performance forms another notable entry in a career that brought him opportunities against accomplished international opposition.

On the 1957 tour of England, Dewdney took 36 first-class wickets at an average of 27.05. His returns included five for 69 against Gloucestershire and five for 38 against Hampshire, where he finished the innings with a hat-trick. His Test involvement on that tour was limited to the Fifth Test, in which he took one wicket.

Dewdney’s final Tests came against the touring Pakistan team in 1957–58. He took seven wickets in three matches. He later toured Australia in 1960–61, collecting five wickets in six first-class appearances, before his first-class career ended after a festival match in 1961.

On his 93rd birthday, those performances provide a concrete way to recognise Dewdney’s place in Jamaica’s cricketing history: a bowler whose West Indies journey carried him from an early selection against Australia to memorable spells in New Zealand and England.
