TobaGrow Loan Facility Launched to Boost Agricultural Investment in Tobago
The Government has welcomed the launch of the TobaGrow Loan Facility, a new financing initiative aimed at improving access to capital for farmers, fisherfolk, agro-processors and agricultural entrepreneurs in Tobago.
The facility, developed through the Agricultural Development Bank of Trinidad and Tobago (ADB), was launched in Tobago on Monday, August 11, with Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Senator Ravi Ratiram describing it as an important intervention to strengthen agricultural investment and enterprise development on the island. The launch was also promoted by Tobago’s Division of Food Security as an initiative specifically geared toward farmers, fishers and agri-entrepreneurs.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Ratiram told stakeholders that affordable and responsive financing must form a critical part of Trinidad and Tobago’s agricultural transformation agenda.
The Minister said TobaGrow represents more than simply providing access to credit, arguing that the programme demonstrates confidence in Tobago’s producers and entrepreneurs and their ability to contribute more significantly to national food security and economic growth.
One of the major challenges facing agricultural operators, according to Ratiram, continues to be access to capital. Farmers, fisherfolk and agribusiness owners can require significant financing for equipment, processing facilities, working capital and expansion.
The Ministry said TobaGrow is intended as a direct response to those financing challenges while forming part of broader efforts to increase agricultural production, encourage enterprise development and attract further investment into the sector.
ADB already provides several specialised agricultural financing products covering areas including agribusiness projects, vehicles and farm machinery, fishing boats and equipment, security improvements and working capital. Its existing products carry varying financing levels, interest rates and repayment periods depending on the facility.
Ratiram commended the ADB’s Board of Directors for approving TobaGrow and recognising what he described as the distinct financing needs of Tobago’s agricultural sector.
He also acknowledged the Tobago House of Assembly for collaborating on the initiative, saying the partnership demonstrated the importance of coordinated institutional action in delivering practical solutions for agricultural stakeholders.
Farmers, fisherfolk, processors and agricultural entrepreneurs in Tobago are being encouraged to explore the opportunities available through the facility and determine whether financing could assist them in expanding their operations.
The Agriculture Minister also reaffirmed his Ministry’s commitment to working with the ADB, THA and other stakeholders to address barriers affecting agricultural development, improve service delivery and create additional opportunities for investment.
The Ministry views the TobaGrow Loan Facility as another step toward strengthening Tobago’s agricultural financing ecosystem, with the broader objective of developing a more resilient, productive and commercially competitive agricultural economy.
