The Indonesian Army (TNI AD) is preparing to establish five new Regional Military Commands (Kodam) across the country. General Maruli stated that the new Kodam units will be located in Flores (East Nusa Tenggara), Special Region of Yogyakarta, North Maluku, Central Papua, and the Riau Islands. Regarding the strategic role of these units, General Maruli explained that in emergency situations, the commands would lead efforts in total people’s defense against external threats. Addressing the specific case of the new command in Central Papua, he clarified that the Kodam would not directly manage conflicts involving the Free Papua Organization (OPM). Instead, such operations remain under the jurisdiction of the TNI’s Satgas Habema. The Kodam is intended to enter regions only after security has been established to conduct territorial operations.
The official inauguration of the five new commands is expected to coincide with the peak celebration of the 81st anniversary of the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) at Monas, Jakarta, on October 5, 2026. This timeline was supported by the Head of the TNI Information Center, Major General Muhammad Nas, who confirmed the planned inauguration during the opening of the TNI Fair.
