Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders held a protest procession in Kolkata on Sunday, alleging that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers occupied a party office and carried out attacks against TMC members. The demonstration took place ahead of the upcoming Assembly bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar, scheduled for October 6.
During the protest, TMC leader Vasundhra Goswami stated that the party had reported incidents of post-poll violence to the police, alleging that party workers had been beaten. TMC leader Baiswanor Chattopadhyay called for the arrest of those responsible for attacks on party councillors, describing the rally as a demand for strict action.
Another TMC leader, Malay Majumdar, alleged that the party office was attacked and that the homes of party members were targeted. He characterized the procession as a peaceful and democratic response to these incidents.
The bypolls were necessitated after the Nandigram seat became vacant when Suvendu Adhikari retained the Bhabanipur seat, and the Rejinagar seat became vacant following the resignation of Humayun Kabir. The TMC has announced it will support Congress candidate Milan Pradhan in the Nandigram bypoll.
