Three People Charged After Fatal Shooting of 19-Year-Old Driver by Toronto Police
Toronto police have charged three individuals, including a teenage girl, in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man by an officer on Thursday. The incident occurred after police tracked a suspect’s vehicle from The Esplanade area in Toronto to Mississauga.
According to police, the investigation began with a report of a person with a gun in The Esplanade area late on Wednesday afternoon. Officers attempted to stop the car and its occupants, but the suspect tried to flee, resulting in the car striking a plainclothes officer.
Ontario’s police watchdog, the Special Investigations Unit, launched an investigation into the incident and reported that three unmarked police cruisers collided with the car shortly after midnight. One officer then shot into the vehicle, hitting the 19-year-old driver, who died at the scene. The three other people in the car were arrested, and an officer was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
On Friday, police announced that a 23-year-old from Toronto, a 19-year-old from Mississauga, and a 17-year-old girl are each facing multiple firearms charges. The incident is still under investigation by the Special Investigations Unit.
