Temblor en Colombia hoy, 6 de noviembre: estos son los reportes del Servicio Geológico Colombiano

Colombia Experiences Frequent Low‑Magnitude Earthquakes, According to the Geological Service Colombia’s position at the convergence of the Nazca, South American, and Caribbean tectonic plates makes it one of the most seismically active countries in the world. The Geological Service of Colombia (Servicio Geológico Colombiano, SGC) reports that the country records roughly 2,500 earthquakes each month. Most of these events are of low magnitude and are not felt by the population, but the interaction of the plates creates several high‑risk seismic zones along the coast and the Andes. ### Recent Seismic Activity (November 2026) The SGC’s latest catalog lists the following earthquakes that occurred on 6 November 2026: | Location | Magnitude | Depth (km) | Local Time | UTC Time | |———-|———–|————|————|———-| | Chipatá, Santander | 2.0 | 118 | 13:12:31 | 18:12:31 | | San Andrés, Santander | 2.1 | 155 | 09:55:18 | 14:55:18 | | Chaparral, Tolima | 2.4 | <70 | 07:50:06 | 12:50:06 | | Sipí, Chocó | 2.2 | 98 | 06:47:13 | 11:47:13 | | Tuluá, Valle del Cauca | 2.0 | <70 | 03:35:56 | 08:35:56 | | Los Santos, Santander | 2.6 | 148 | 01:52:42 | 06:52:42 | | Cáceres, Antioquia | 2.3 | 72 | 22:31:43 (05 Nov) | 03:31:43 (06 Nov) | | Chaparral, Tolima | 2.0 | <30 | 22:28:12 (05 Nov) | 03:28:12 (06 Nov) | | Chaparral, Tolima | 2.3 | <30 | 21:57:08 (05 Nov) | 02:57:08 (06 Nov) | | Los Santos, Santander | 2.0 | 138 | 21:19:02 (05 Nov) | 02:19:02 (06 Nov) | | El Carmen, Santander | 2.2 | 102 | 21:09:17 (05 Nov) | 02:09:17 (06 Nov) | Other recent events include a 2.8‑magnitude quake 28 km south of Mina Collahuasi (Chile) and a 3.1‑magnitude shallow event in Tesalia, Huila on 5 November 2026. ### Why Colombia Has High Seismicity The country’s tectonic setting—where the Nazca plate subducts beneath the South American plate and the Caribbean plate interacts along the northern margin—creates frequent stress accumulation and release. The resulting seismicity is concentrated along the Pacific coast, the Andean cordilleras, and the Caribbean coast. ### Distinguishing Terms - Tremor: A low‑intensity seismic movement that typically causes no damage. - Earthquake: A seismic event of higher magnitude that can damage structures and cause injuries. - Seismic Silence: A prolonged period of little or no significant seismic activity, which may precede a larger event. ### Emergency Resources In the event of an earthquake, Colombian citizens can contact the following emergency lines: - National emergency line: 123 - National Police: 112 - Traffic Police: 127 - Civil Defense: 144 - Firefighters: 119 - Red Cross: 132 - Ambulance Service: 125 - Anti‑Kidnapping Unit (Gaula): 165 - Disaster Response: 111 ### Seismic Monitoring Network The SGC operates 339 seismic stations across Colombia, including 206 stations in the national seismic network and 133 stations on active volcanoes monitored by three volcanological observatories. These stations provide real‑time data that help detect and analyze seismic events. ### Preparedness The SGC recommends that individuals keep an emergency kit that includes hygiene items, a first‑aid kit, warm clothing, non‑perishable food, cash, a radio or flashlight with batteries, and any special items needed for infants, the elderly, or pets. While earthquakes cannot be predicted, seismographs and accelerometers detect ground motion in real time, allowing authorities to issue warnings as quickly as possible.
