Somalia Announces $70 Million Road Project Linking Borama and Lowya-Cadde

The Somali federal government has announced a new infrastructure initiative featuring a nearly $70 million road project connecting Borama and Lowya-Cadde. The project is intended to improve regional transport links, facilitate trade, and stimulate economic activity by connecting communities to key commercial hubs. Ayuub Ismail Yusuf, the Minister of Public Works, Reconstruction and Housing, unveiled the plan during a conference held to approve the ministry’s 2026–2029 strategic roadmap. “We are undertaking road projects in Somaliland, including the road linking Borama and Lowya-Cadde, which is estimated to cost close to $70 million,” Yusuf stated. Beyond the Borama-Lowya-Cadde link, the ministry’s broader strategy includes the construction and rehabilitation of up to 5,000 kilometers of roads nationwide. These efforts aim to improve connectivity between districts, airports, and seaports to enhance the efficiency of domestic transport. Additional infrastructure proposals include a $60 million drainage system project in Mogadishu and a road connecting Beledweyne to Kalabeyr. The government maintains that these investments are essential for Somalia’s economic development. By reducing travel times and logistical costs, the ministry expects the improved network to better connect rural producers—such as farmers and livestock traders—with urban markets and export facilities. Officials noted that the projects are also expected to generate local employment and encourage investment in regions previously hindered by poor infrastructure. The long-term success of these initiatives remains contingent upon effective implementation, consistent funding, and ongoing maintenance. The government emphasized that the projects are part of a comprehensive strategy to strengthen national transport networks, though the ultimate economic impact will depend on the ability of these investments to lower transport costs and foster sustainable trade opportunities.
