Reversible-Lane System Launched on Eastern Main Road to Ease Traffic Congestion

The much-anticipated reversible-lane system on the Eastern Main Road between Mt Lambert and St Joseph was officially launched today. This innovative traffic management solution aims to alleviate congestion on this busy stretch by utilizing dynamic lane controls over a 2.4 km section of the road.

Drivers will encounter electronic lane indicators at ten points along this route, along with three supporting electronic message signs. These signals are crucial for safe navigation: a green arrow indicates a lane is open, a red X means a lane is closed, and a yellow X warns that lane operations are changing. Yellow turning arrows specify lanes reserved for turning only.

The entire system is managed remotely from the Traffic Management Headquarters in Caroni. This setup allows for real-time adjustments based on traffic conditions, which could significantly enhance road capacity without the need for physical expansion.

For the reversible-lane system to be effective, public education is essential. Drivers, especially those unfamiliar with the road, must be made aware of the new signals. Understanding and adhering to these signals is vital for preventing accidents and ensuring that the system functions smoothly.

In time, the system’s success will be evaluated based on its impact on travel times and accident rates. If the new technology proves effective, it could serve as a model for future road management strategies in the region.
