Government Investigates Mining Company After Chemical Leak and Mass Fish Death

The government of Suriname is investigating a mining company in connection with a chemical leak that is believed to have caused a large-scale fish death in the Saramacca area. According to President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons, the harmful substances may have originated from one of the two companies operating on the Grassalco concession in the Maripasoto area.

During a government press conference on Monday, President Geerlings-Simons confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine which mining company is responsible for the chemical leak. The incident has resulted in significant environmental damage, with a large number of fish found dead in the affected area.

The government has not yet released the names of the two companies operating on the concession, but an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the chemical leak and the extent of the damage.
