Kush says foreign preference and fight-down culture continue hurting local music development

Kush believes one of the biggest obstacles facing the local music industry is cultural, arguing that audiences often embrace foreign products more quickly while local creatives compete against each other instead of building collectively.

During the podcast discussion, Kush described the culture as too reactive rather than proactive.

He said talented artists can spend years making music without receiving widespread attention, only for support to suddenly appear after one song begins generating momentum.

Kush also criticised what he described as a “fight-down” mentality in which people become concerned about someone else receiving more attention or credit.

He argued that successful industries require different people to perform different roles without everyone trying to become the central figure.

Using a business organisation as an example, Kush said an accountant and human resources manager have different responsibilities but remain equally necessary to the organisation’s success.

He believes music should operate in a similar way, with artists, producers, managers and other contributors focusing on doing their individual jobs well.

According to Kush, the entire scene benefits when people stop viewing another person’s success as a threat to their own.
