Ramaphosa Wins Court Interdict to Halt Phala Phala Impeachment Hearings

President Cyril Ramaphosa has successfully secured an interim interdict from the Western Cape High Court, blocking Parliament’s Section 89 impeachment committee from proceeding with public hearings. The court order comes as Ramaphosa challenges the legality of the independent panel report that led to the impeachment inquiry over the Phala Phala farm scandal.

The interdict effectively pauses the politically charged process, giving the President’s legal team time to argue that the panel’s findings were flawed. The Section 89 committee, which was expected to hear evidence in public, must now wait for the court’s final decision.

This move escalates the tension between the executive and legislative branches, with critics accusing Ramaphosa of using the courts to delay accountability. Supporters, however, argue that the President is entitled to challenge what they call an unfair process. The case is set to return to court soon, with the outcome likely to shape the political landscape.
