The Mpox virus continues to spread across the Kasai province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with health authorities reporting that nine health zones are now affected. During a provincial council of ministers meeting held last Thursday in Tshikapa, officials confirmed a total of 77 suspected cases, 16 confirmed cases, and three deaths.
Data from the 37th epidemiological week identifies Luebo as the current epicenter of the outbreak, accounting for 38 suspected cases, 13 confirmed cases, and all three recorded deaths. Other affected areas include Mushenge, Kanzala, Mikope, Kalonda Ouest, Kamuesha, Ndjoko-Punda, Kitangwa, and Tshikapa.
In response to the rising numbers, the national Ministry of Public Health has urged residents in affected areas to adhere to strict hygiene protocols. Christian Ngandu, a physician coordinating the Mpox response for the ministry, advised the public to wash their hands frequently, avoid contact with infected individuals, and refrain from consuming undercooked meat, particularly bushmeat.
Beyond the Mpox outbreak, provincial health authorities have also reported the circulation of yellow fever in the region. According to the provincial Ministry of Health, 11 suspected cases of yellow fever have been identified across four health zones. Provincial Governor Crispin Mukendi has called for enhanced surveillance measures to contain both outbreaks.
